COVID-19 and Diabetes – new guidance for care home residents

The Director of Diabetes Frail, Professor Alan Sinclair, recently organised and co-chaired a multidisciplinary Stakeholder rapid response group to create guidance for practical diabetes management of residents with diabetes during Covid-19. The guidance is aimed at staff working in care homes and community specialist and non-specialist nurses. This guidance also involved the Joint British Diabetes Societies for Inpatient Care (JBDS-IP), Diabetes UK, and the Association of British Clinical Diabetologists (ABCD).

This guidance is available online here.

This work is part of a range of projects involving Diabetes Frail and continues to demonstrate our commitment to excellence and improving the care of older people with diabetes, and particularly those with frailty and complex comorbidities.

Further work by Professor Sinclair in the area of Covid-19 and diabetes can be viewed here which is an article for EClinicalMedicine ( a Lancet journal) where he and Dr Abdelhafiz discuss the increased hazard to survival in those with diabetes, frailty and advanced age.
