Professor Alan Sinclair launched Diabetes Frail to further explore the emerging importance of frailty as a better-defined concept in ageing populations and its association with diabetes. Diabetes and frailty may be causally related and operate through each of the key components of the frailty phenotype or via the associated medical co-morbidities. The presence of frailty in a setting of diabetes increases the level of disability and leads to poorer clinical outcomes. The vascular complications of diabetes (both macro and microvascular) are implicated in this aetiopathogenesis of frailty and any associated mood disturbance or cognitive impairments worsen the outcome.

Since March 2020, the work of Diabetes Frail has been severely hampered by the covid-19 outbreak which led to a suspension of related European Union-funded clinical trials connected with Diabetes Frail. However, Professor Sinclair has continued to be one of the leading UK diabetologists and has collaborate actively with his UK and European colleagues to publish nearly 20 research and review publications in 2020 as of October 2020 with two papers being published in Lancet Diabetes & Endocrinology.

Future research, audit, clinical guideline development, and strategic healthcare development work will continue under the auspices of the Foundation for Diabetes Research in Older People (FDROP) which has been the academic arm of Diabetes Frail since 2015.
